A Polish jazz legend returns in the third part of the acclaimed series of recordings from the artist’s private archives. After a music trip to East Berlin with easy listening tunes (on “When Where Why”, recorded from 1972 to 1979), and a swinging visit to the 1960’s Czech Prague (“Blues for Prague”, recordings from 1965 to 1966), the time came for documenting the cooperation with the Belgian big band BRT on the album Jerzy Milian Tapes. Imaginativeness and ambition: this describes the recordings well.

In the 1980’s, Jerzy Milian was a one-man institution on the Polish music market. He led the Orkiestra Rozrywkowa PRiTV (the Polish Radio and Television Entertainment Orchestra) in Katowice, with which he made numerous recordings and played hundreds of shows. He composed songs and arranged jazz standards; he even prepared a collection of jazz carols for an a cappella vocal group! He found time in his demanding schedule to refresh contacts with the Belgian big band BRT, with whom he had been working since 1966. The final stage of cooperation with the Belgians, as documented in the album “Stratus Nimbus”, is the complex, thrilling collection of compositions that glitter with all the colors of the musical rainbow. It is testimony to the fact that jazz can tell a story as beautifully as classical music and that jazz does not have to consist of a single theme with a number of similar improvisations.

Legenda polskiego jazzu powraca w trzeciej części doskonale przyjętego cyklu archiwalnych nagrań z prywatnego archiwum artysty. Po tanecznej wycieczce do Berlina Wschodniego („When Where Why”, nagrania z lat 1972-79) i swingującej wizycie w czeskiej Pradze lat 60. („Blues for Praha”, nagrania z lat 1965-66) w ramach „Jerzy Milian Tapes” przyszedł czas na dokumentację współpracy z belgijskim big-bandem BRT. Ambitnie i z polotem.

W latach 80. Jerzy Milian był na polskim rynku człowiekiem-instytucją. Prowadził Orkiestrę Rozrywkową PRiTV w Katowicach, z którą dokonał niezliczonych nagrań i zagrał setki koncertów. Komponował piosenki, aranżował jazzowe standardy, przygotował nawet zbiór jazzowych pastorałek na zespół wokalny a capella! W natłoku zajęć znalazł także czas, by odświeżyć kontakt z belgijskim big-bandem BRT, z którym współpracował od 1966 roku. Ostatni etap pracy z Belgami, udokumentowany na „Stratus Nimbus”, to złożone, porywające kompozycje mieniące się wszystkimi kolorami tęczy. Dowód na to, że jazz może opowiadać historie równie pięknie jak muzyka klasyczna – i nie musi składać się z jednego tematu i szeregu podobnych improwizacji.
