Lo and behold, the second installment of archive recordings by one of Poland’s seminal jazz musicians is out now! This time it’s the 1960s Czechosloviakia pulsating with the sound of Gustav Brom’s big band and Jerzy Milian’s formidable vibe playing. Fiery renderings of jazz standards, passionate solos and exquisite guests. A wonderful combination of American tradition and Prague’s local colour.

Milian, who by mid-1960s had already been an experienced musician and performer, having played with Krzysztof Komeda and Jan Ptaszyn Wróblewski, accepted Gustav Brom’s invitation to appear at the Prague Jazz Festival in October 1965. The young Polish lad seized the audience during a memorable performance, bringing down the house and becoming the event’s biggest revelation almost instantly. Although the live recordings have not survived, their studio equivalents, laid down at the Czech radio and encompassing the material from the entire show, are now available.

Jerzy Milian, mający w połowie lat 60. na swoim koncie udaną karierę solową oraz współpracę z Janem Ptaszynem Wróblewskim czy Krzysztofem Komedą, przyjął zaproszenie Gustava Broma na Festiwal Jazzowy w Pradze w październiku 1965 roku. Zagrał z taką energią, jakby szacowną salę praskiej Lucerny chciał rozerwać na strzępy. I stał się największą sensacją całej imprezy. Choć nagrania z Festiwalu nie przetrwały do dzisiaj, to cały program został zarejestrowany w studiach czeskiego radia.
